John Bartis tells his amazing story
I am an active career law enforcement officer of 30 years. I have suffered with back pain on and off for more than 25 years. It started out with sciatic pain going down my leg when I was in my late 20’s. As I grew older, I experienced different symptoms experiencing moderate to severe pain, which prevented me from standing up straight.
I was prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and took ibuprofen as necessary. I started out going to a chiropractor that only provided temporary relief. I learned to live and work in pain on a daily basis. Sitting 8-10 hours in a patrol car did not help my situation. My back pain limited my activity and frequently prevented me from my daily workouts. My family physician would prescribe the usual fit alls, a steroid pack with pain medication and suggested the use of ice packs and rest. I tried physical therapy, epidural injections and a nerve block. All of these treatments provided relief for a minimal period of time but the symptoms would eventually return.
Everyone in my family knew of my back discomfort. A family member learned of another back treatment program. He told me that someone he knew had immediate relief from something only known to him as the DRX9000. My back problems began in 1989 when our van smashed into the side of a flatbed truck. While the seatbelt I was wearing saved my life, the impact left me with some major injuries.
The first part of my small colon ruptured leading to peritonitis and pancreatitis. The force of the collision broke a spinous process on my back and realigned my vertebrae in the lower spinal area. In 2004 (15 years after my accident), I was diagnosed with advanced degenerative disc disease from L2 through S-1.
As the pain progressed, my spinal orthopedic surgeon recommended a series of treatments to avoid surgery. I had weeks of physical therapy, took large amounts of prescription painkillers, had two spinal injections, and acupuncture all in the span of a year.
The pain only became worse.
As a surgical nurse, I'm constantly on my feet. I also travel extensively throughout the world lecturing on laser technology and endoscopy. My back problems were not willing to comply with my busy schedule, and I wasn't about to give up.
As my quality of life continued to decline, I reluctantly decided that surgery was my only option. The spinal fusion was scheduled.
